In December 2017 Imagineer Productions was awarded £600,000 by Arts Council England through its Ambition for Excellence programme, to realise Bridge, an ambitious outdoor arts project celebrating the intersection of art, engineering and social change, creating a new network of outdoor arts partners across the Midlands.
Over the next three years, exploring themes of bridge building, ‘fierce kindness’ and human progress, Imagineer will collaborate with exceptional artists and civil engineers Arup, to produce three major events in Coventry, Worcester & Grantham. An iconic bridge structure will inhabit public spaces for up to two weeks at a time, inspiring and framing spectacular, immersive live performances, creative community responses and interactive lighting / digital animations.
Bridge builds on Imagineer’s ground-breaking collaboration with structural engineers Arup and Coventry Cathedral, evolved through Arup’s work with Coventry schools on the Bridge project for FOI 2016 and 2017.
Bridge will be led by producer Claire Maddocks for Imagineer, working with an excellent creative team; artistic director, Orit Azaz, designer Dan Potra, choreographer Corey Baker, a multi-disciplinary team from Arup and outdoor arts producer Lou Lomas. The creative team will be mentored by Helen Marriage Artistic Director of Artichoke.
Peter Knott, Area Director, Arts Council England said: “As Coventry prepares to become City of Culture 2021, Bridge is a significant marker for what promises to be an outstanding programme of work.
“Funded by the National Lottery through Ambition for Excellence, this fund helps amazing things happen. Imagineer is a company with pedigree, and this large-scale outdoor spectacle will involve more and more people in the positivity that great art can bring.”
Bridge will be launched at Coventry Cathedral during the 2018 Festival of Imagineers in September 2018 and will form part of 100th anniversary of Coventry Cathedral and Diocese (the modern diocese of Coventry was created in 1918, and the church of St Michael designated as its cathedral).
Bridge is a Foyle Foundation Commission 2018.
Funding partners include: Arts Council England Ambition for Excellence Award, Great Places, City of Culture Trust, The Foyle Foundation, Gravity Fields, The University of Worcester, The canal and River Trust, The Premier Group.
Bridge research and development and performances will take place during The Festival of Imagineers 2018 and 2019 – please link to www.festivalofimagineers.co.uk for up to date information
